As we mentioned above, the primary situation in which you'll want to use a contactor is in any high-powered circuit in which an overload condition is likely to occur. This is particularly true if subsequently leaving the circuit in an energized state will create a hazardous environment for people and/or equipment.

Why is a contactor necessary?

A contactor is an electrical device which is used for switching an electrical circuit on or off. ... These contacts are in most cases normally open and provide operating power to the load when the contactor coil is energized. Contactors are most commonly used for controlling electric motors.

Does a motor need a contactor?

Contactors are a specialized form of relay capable of switching higher power loads such as motors, lighting and electric heaters. Turning large electrical power loads such as motors, lighting and heaters on and off is a common automation requirement.

Is a contactor the same as a starter?

The mechanical elements of starters and contactors are identical. ... The contactor applies voltage to a contactor coil to close the contacts and to supply and interrupt power to the circuit. A motor starter is simply a contactor PLUS an overload relay and is rated by motor HP or amperage.

Why use a relay instead of a contactor?

Relays are used to control contacts of an electrical circuit due to a change of parameters or conditions in the same circuit or any other associated circuit. Contactors, on the other hand, are used to interrupt or establish connections in an electrical circuit repeatedly under different conditions.

What is the difference between breaker and contactor?

An electronic contactor is a simple switching device, whereas the circuit breaker is a protective system. The primary function of a contactor is controlling the power. A circuit breaker does the protecting. Contactor works under normal situations.

What's a device that doesn't switch motors on and off directly?

What are heavy duty relays? Do not switch motor contactors and starters on and off but instead are used to directly start motors.

Why use a motor starter instead of a contactor?

A contactor applies voltage to a contactor coil to close the contacts and to supply and interrupt power to the circuit. On the other hand, a starter employs overload relays to protect the motor from load surges by shutting it down to prevent overheating.

Why is a contactor used as a starter for motors?

In motor starter, contactor controls the flow of electric current to the connected motor and repeatedly make and break (interrupt) the power circuit from main power supply. The overload protection block in a starter protects the motor from drawing excessive current and overheating and burning out the circuit.

Do single phase motors require starters?

A starter circuit is needed to turn a single phase motor. Once the motor reaches a minimum speed, the starter circuit is turned off. Three phase motors don't need a starter circuit. The start up current surge can be 6 or more times the run current.

What is definite purpose contactor?

Definite purpose contactors and starters are electrically operated switching devices specifically designed for the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC) industry. They are subjected to stringent quality assurance inspections and testing procedures.

What is the purpose of a lighting contactor?

Lighting contactors are relay switches that control the flow of electricity through a circuit powering the lighting in a given area. They exist remotely and control circuits with higher voltages which can be dangerous to the operator, if controlled directly.

What is the purpose of a contactor in an electrical control system?

A contactor is an electrically-controlled switch used for switching an electrical power circuit. A contactor is typically controlled by a circuit which has a much lower power level than the switched circuit, such as a 24-volt coil electromagnet controlling a 230-volt motor switch.

What are the two basic types of contactors?

There are different types of contacts in a contactor, and they are; auxiliary contact, power contact, and contact spring. The power contact has two types that are; stationary and movable contact.

What is the purpose of vacuum contactors in electrical panel?

They ensure safe switching of operational currents and overload currents in categories AC-1 to AC-4 – even during voltage dips.

How does a single pole contactor work?

With a 1 pole contactor, the shunt circuit is used when the device being operated is always to have power to it, such as in the case of a crankcase heater. ... The crankcase heater or any other device that should be constantly energized would be connected to the same side as the power, L2.

Is it necessary to connect a starter to an induction motor?

Such a current can be 6 to 8 times of full load or rated current and it can damage the motor winding. Hence there should be a device which can limit such high starting current. Such a device which limits high starting current is called a starter. Let us study in detail why starter is required for an induction motor.

When should you use a motor starter?

Introduction. Motor starters are one of the major inventions for motor control applications. As the name suggests, a starter is an electrical device which controls the electrical power for starting a motor. These electrical devices are also used for the purpose of stopping, reversing and protecting electric motors.

What does a motor starter have that a contactor does not have?

The difference is that motor starters have one extra system or systems not found in contactors — an overload relay of some type to cut voltage input should that relay sense a motor-overload or thermally compromising condition due prolonged running overcurrent.

Why do we need starters?

Starters are used to protect DC motors from damage that can be caused by very high current and torque during startup. They do this by providing external resistance to the motor, which is connected in series to the motor's armature winding and restricts the current to an acceptable level.

What is requirement of motor starter?

Motor starters consist of two devices—a contactor that completes the circuit to the motor and an overload relay that monitors the current the motor is drawing. This overload protection device is set to a pre-determined maximum load that the motor can safely handle.

Why a magnetic starter is very important?

A magnetic starter is an electromagnetically operated switch which provides a safe method for starting an electric motor with a large load. Magnetic starters also provide under-voltage and overload protection and an automatic cutoff in the event of a power failure.

What is the most common cause of motor failure?

Winding insulation breakdown and bearing wear are the two most common causes of motor failure, but those conditions arise for many different reasons.

Is it OK to restart a motor immediately after it has stopped or been overloaded?

Inherent motor overload protection is provided by sensing devices within the motor and external overload protection is applied to the current passing device, the relay, the contactor, or the starter. ... A motor can be restarted immediately after it has stopped or been overloaded.

What can cause a motor to overheat?

• Too little or no coolant. Driving without proper levels of coolant/antifreeze may cause a coolant system failure. ...
• Cooling system leaks. ...
• A broken water pump. ...
• Radiator issues. ...
• Oil too low. ...
• Thermostat failure. ...
• Issues with the belts and hoses. ...
• Heater core is plugged up.
