Most crustaceans do not have antennae, but those that do, will have two pairs. Insects usually have mandibles for tearing food and helping in its digestion. Crustaceans have chelicerae, or claws, at the end of their first set of legs to do this same thing.

What makes a crustacea a crustacea?

Like other arthropods, crustaceans have an exoskeleton, which they moult to grow. They are distinguished from other groups of arthropods, such as insects, myriapods and chelicerates, by the possession of biramous (two-parted) limbs, and by their larval forms, such as the nauplius stage of branchiopods and copepods.

Do myriapods have chelicerae?

Mandibles are present in the extant subphyla Myriapoda (millipedes and others), Crustacea and Hexapoda (insects etc.). ... Unlike the chelicerae of arachnids, mandibles can often be used to chew food. Mandibulates also differ by having antennae, and also by having three distinct body regions: head, thorax and abdomen.

How many antennae do crustacea have?

Crustaceans bear two pairs of antennae. The pair attached to the first segment of the head are called primary antennae or antennules. This pair is generally uniramous, but is biramous in crabs and lobsters and remipedes.

Do Hexapods have Biramous appendages?

Crustaceans possess two pairs of antennae, mandibles as mouthparts, and biramous (“two branched”) appendages, which means that their legs are formed in two parts, as distinct from the uniramous (“one branched”) myriapods and hexapods (Figure 4). ... Most crustaceans are dioecious, which means that the sexes are separate.

Characteristics of Crustaceans

What do Crustacea and Hexapoda have in common?

Insects and crustaceans, such as this crayfish, have similarities such as exoskeletons and antennae. Both insects and crustaceans form dominant animal groups in the aquatic and terrestrial systems. ... This relationship between crustaceans and hexapods is outlined in the clade Pancrustacea.

Is Crustacea a class or subphylum?

crustacean, any member of the subphylum Crustacea (phylum Arthropoda), a group of invertebrate animals consisting of some 45,000 species distributed worldwide.

How do crustacea differ from other arthropod groups quizlet?

How do crustacea differ from other arthropod groups? only crustaceans have two pairs of antennae. You just studied 12 terms!

What other important characteristics of crustacea distinguish them from other arthropods?

What characteristics distinguish crustaceans from other arthropods? The characteristics that distinguish crustaceans from other arthropods are that they have gills, two body systems, and two pairs of antennae.

What is the most diverse class of crustacea?

Class Copepoda - the copepods

This is one of the most diverse classes of crustaceans- over 7500 species!

Did trilobites have Chelicerae?

Arthropoda Overview

Arthropoda includes chelicerates, insects, myriapods, and crustaceans - as well as many extinct taxa, such as trilobites.

Does an ant have a cerci?

Abdomen tip: Cerci (tails) absent but some have a prominent stinger. Where are ants found? amongst leaf litter.

Do crustaceans have Pedipalps?

Pedipalps are traditionally thought to be homologous with mandibles in crustaceans and insects, although more recent studies (e.g. using Hox genes) suggest they are probably homologous with the crustacean second antennae.

Do crustaceans feel pain?

Crustaceans have long been viewed as maintaining reflexes that do not cause internal suffering, which would mean they do not truly feel pain (as noted by Elwood 2019). A reflex involves the firing of relatively few neurons resulting in a very fast response to stimuli.

Do all crustaceans have 10 legs?

The Decapods or Decapoda (lthe name means "ten footed") are a group (order) of crustaceans in the class Malacostraca They include crayfish, crabs, hermit crabs, lobsters, prawns and shrimp. ... All decapods have ten legs; these are five pairs of thoracic appendages on the last five thoracic segments.

Do crabs have Swimmerets?

Blue crabs are strong, agile swimmers equipped with a pair of paddle-like appendages called swimmerets that help them swim sideways, backward and even forward.

Do Scorpions have chelicerae?

Scorpions, like other arachnids, digest their food externally. The chelicerae, which are very sharp, are used to pull small amounts of food off the prey item into a pre-oral cavity below the chelicerae and carapace.

Do Chelicerates have antennae?

Common name: chelicerates, arachnids

Chelicerates have two body segments; a cephalothorax and an abdomen. They have no antennae, but have six pairs of appendages. The most anterior appendages are called the chelicerae and are normally modified into pincers or fangs.

What is a Nauplius What is the difference between direct and indirect development in crustacea?

A nauplius is the free swimming microscopic first larval stage of many crustaceans, having an unsegmented body; three pairs of appendages and a single median eye. Direct and indirect development are terms that describe different processes of animal development. Animal development begins with a fertilized egg.

Which of the following are characteristics of arthropods?

All arthropods posses an exoskeleton, bi-lateral symmetry, jointed appendages, segmented bodies, and specialized appendages. The major arthropod classes can be separated by comparing their number of body regions, legs, and antennae.

What is the function of the Telson?

What is the function of the telson? It is the tail - it allows the crayfish to escape enemies and is also used for swimming.

How are all insects alike?

One way all insects are alike is that they have six legs. Three legs on each side of the body. ... The thorax is the middle part of an insect's body. Many insects have wings that are attached to the thorax.

What belongs to the subphylum Crustacea?

Approximately 30,000 species make up this Subphylum. Most are aquatic; of these, the majority are marine but some are found in fresh water. Members of the Subphylum include lobsters, crabs, crayfish, shrimp, copepods, barnacles, and several other groups of organisms.

What is the order of subphylum Crustacea?

Class Cephalocarida – horseshow shrimps. Class Branchiopoda – tadpole, fairy, and brine shrimps. Class Ostracoda – ostracods, seed shrimp. Class Copepoda – copepods, fish lice.

How many classes are in Crustacea?

Crustaceans are grouped into five classes: Branchipoda, Ostracoda, Remipedia, Maxillopoda and Malacostraca.
