The type of life that might inhabit Europa likely would not be powered by photosynthesis – but by chemical reactions. Europa's surface is blasted by radiation from Jupiter. That's a bad thing for life on the surface – it couldn't survive. But the radiation may create fuel for life in an ocean below the surface.

Can Europa support human life?

Europa, the fourth-largest moon of Jupiter, is a subject in both science fiction and scientific speculation for future human colonization. Europa's geophysical features, including a possible subglacial water ocean, make it a possibility that human life could be sustained on or beneath the surface.

Can Europa Harbour life?

Jupiter's moon Europa and its global ocean may currently have conditions suitable for life. Scientists are studying processes on the icy surface as they prepare to explore. ... And any molecules that might qualify as potential biosignatures, which include chemical signs of life, could be affected at that depth.

Can humans breathe on Europa?

Europa has a thin oxygen atmosphere, but it is far too tenuous for humans to breathe. ... Europa's magnetic field shields its surface from Jupiter's deadly radiation.

Why is Europa suitable for life?

From ground-based telescopes, scientists knew that Europa's surface is mostly water ice, and scientists have found strong evidence that beneath the ice crust is an ocean of liquid water or slushy ice. ... Europa's vast and unfathomably deep ocean is widely considered the most promising place to look for life beyond Earth.

Which moon is most likely to support life?

The strongest candidates for natural satellite habitability are currently icy satellites such as those of Jupiter and Saturn—Europa and Enceladus respectively, although if life exists in either place, it would probably be confined to subsurface habitats.

Does Europa have oxygen?

Europa does have an atmosphere, although tenuous. This atmosphere is composed solely of oxygen. Unlike our atmosphere, the oxygen in Europa's atmosphere is likely not produced biologically. Europa's atmosphere is maintained by charged particles that hit its cold surface and produce water vapor.

Is the water on Europa drinkable?

The best places to look for life are where the ocean overlies warm rock. This may be the case inside Europa (Jupiter) and Enceladus (Saturn), but chemical reactions with the rock would make the liquid water salty, so not good to drink.

What is the red stuff on Europa?

Despite their unnerving appearance, the red scars criss-crossing Europa are, of course, not biological. They are actually cracks and ridges marking weak lines within the moon's ice crust, emphasised and exacerbated by the swelling and falling of tides due to Jupiter's gravitational pull.

How long would terraforming take?

Depending on whom you talk to, terraforming could take anywhere from 50 years to 100 million years to complete. The surface might one day look like our own Earth. It could also resemble a massive metropolis with people unable to live outside of domes or other manmade structures for hundreds of years.

What kind of life could exist on Europa?

That amount of oxygen would be enough to support more than just microscopic life-forms: At least three million tons of fishlike creatures could theoretically live and breathe on Europa, said study author Richard Greenberg of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Are we going to Europa?

NASA's upcoming mission to the Jupiter ocean moon Europa is out of rocket limbo. The Europa Clipper spacecraft is scheduled to lift off in October 2024 and arrive in orbit around Jupiter in April 2030, mission project scientist Bob Pappalardo announced Wednesday (Feb.

Is life on Titan possible?

Although there is so far no evidence of life on Titan, its complex chemistry and unique environments are certain to make it a destination for continued exploration.

Will we be able to live on Mars?

However, the surface is not hospitable to humans or most known life forms due to the radiation, greatly reduced air pressure, and an atmosphere with only 0.16% oxygen. ... Human survival on Mars would require living in artificial Mars habitats with complex life-support systems.

Is Ganymede habitable?

When searching for habitability outside of Earth, scientists often look for water as one of the main indicators that a celestial object could host some form of life. Icy moons like Ganymede and Enceladus may not look like Earth, but they could be habitable in their own way.

Is Saturn habitable?

Unfortunately, no. Saturn can't support life as we know it because Saturn is a gas giant planet. It has no solid surface because it is composed of gases, mostly hydrogen and helium. The further into the atmosphere, the denser it gets, and the pressure squeezes the gas into a liquid.

Why are there cracks on Europa?

According to researcher Gregory Hoppa the curved cracks on Europa are caused by its orbit being slightly excentric due to the influence of Io and Ganymede (other moons of Jupiter). ... When Europa is farther, the tides fall because Jupiter's force falls. This causes Europa's ice shell to flex."

What are the brown marks on Europa?

Brown, linear (double) ridges extend prominently across the scene. They could be frozen remnants of cryovolcanic activity which occurred when water or partly molten water ice erupted on the Europan surface, freezing almost instantly in the extremely low temperatures so far from our sun.

What are the veins on the moon?

Veins (or Vessels) are very unique formations on the moon's surface. They look very much like the veins in the skin of a human body. ... The best source to look for lunar Veins is the "Big Shadows" presentation in the LROC site's WAC Mosaic of the entire moon's surface.

How deep is the ocean on Europa?

Europa's possible ocean is estimated to be 100-200km deep. Despite the great depth of the Europa's ocean, hydrostatic pressure at the seafloor would be 130-260 MPa, corresponding to 13-26 km depth of a theoretical Earth's ocean.

Is Earth the only planet with life?

The third planet from the sun, Earth is the only place in the known universe confirmed to host life. With a radius of 3,959 miles, Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system, and it's the only one known for sure to have liquid water on its surface. ... Earth is the only planet known to maintain life.

Is there any planet that can support life?

Understanding planetary habitability is partly an extrapolation of the conditions on Earth, as this is the only planet known to support life.

Which planet has most oxygen?

Answer: From the table we see that Mercury has the greatest percentage of oxygen in its atmosphere.

Is Europa in the habitable zone?

Water, water everywhere

Europa is in its own little habitable zone around Jupiter. It's not too close, which would turn it into a volcano extravaganza like Io, and not too far, which would leave it cold and unchanging like Callisto. Europa is warm, but not too hot.

Does Europa have energy?

A potential energy source for life appears to be common on Jupiter's icy moon Europa, a new study suggests. ... Hydrogen peroxide is created on Europa due to the intense radiation bombardment of the moon's surface as it moves through Jupiter's powerful magnetic field.
