Small omphaloceles are often fixed easily. They normally cause no long-term problems. Babies with damage to the abdominal organs may have long-term problems.

Can omphalocele go away?

Sometimes the omphalocele can be too large to repair right away. Skin will grow to cover the sac with the help of medication, good skin care and nutrition. If this happens, your baby will then have surgery to close the belly muscles in six to 12 months when the belly is larger.

Can omphalocele Correct itself in the womb?

Small omphaloceles are easily repaired with a simple operation and a short stay in the nursery. Large omphaloceles may require staged repair over many weeks in the nursery. Giant omphaloceles require complex reconstruction over weeks, months, or even years.

Can omphalocele be misdiagnosed?

It is mandatory to look carefully in a case of omphalocele for presence of any true abdominal wall defect, umbilical ring, and the base for presence of skin collar so that the condition is not misdiagnosed.

Can omphalocele be corrected?

Omphaloceles are repaired with surgery, although not always immediately. A sac protects the abdominal contents and allows time for other more serious problems (such as heart defects) to be dealt with first, if necessary.

Omphalocele and Gastroschisis

When does omphalocele develop?

As the baby develops during weeks six through ten of pregnancy, the intestines get longer and push out from the belly into the umbilical cord. By the eleventh week of pregnancy, the intestines normally go back into the belly. If this does not happen, an omphalocele occurs.

How serious is omphalocele?

The overall outcome of isolated omphalocele is excellent: some infants may have minor intestinal problems in the first few months, but will recover from that and lead a completely normal life. Although the belly button may not look perfectly normal, there should be minimal scarring.

How do you fix an omphalocele?

The repair is performed the following way: Right after birth, a plastic pouch (called a silo) or a mesh-type of material is used to contain the omphalocele. The pouch or mesh is then attached to the baby's belly. Every 2 to 3 days, the doctor gently tightens the pouch or mesh to push the intestine into the belly.

How early can omphalocele be detected?

Omphalocele can be detected through ultrasound from 14 weeks of gestation; however, it is easier to diagnose as the pregnancy progresses and organs can be seen outside the abdomen protruding into the amniotic cavity.

Can omphalocele cause problems later in life?

They normally cause no long-term problems. Babies with damage to the abdominal organs may have long-term problems. Your child may have trouble with digestion, having bowel movements, and infection.

What is considered a small omphalocele?

A small omphalocele contains only bowel. This can also be referred to as “cord hernia,” where the fetal abdomen closes but a small loop of bowel remains in the umbilical cord. Small omphaloceles may be associated with higher incidence of chromosomal abnormalities.

What does giant omphalocele mean?

Abstract: Giant omphalocele (GO) is a congenital ventral abdominal wall defect characterized by a large opening with herniated abdominal organs, including liver, loss of abdominal cavity volume, and other associated congenital anomalies.

Is omphalocele a hernia?

Exomphalos (omphalocele)

Exomphalos is characterized by herniation of the intra-abdominal contents into the base of the umbilical cord, with a covering amnioperitoneal membrane. The most frequently herniated organs are the liver, bowel and stomach.

Is it possible to not have a belly button?

Some people don't have a belly button, and the reason for this may be related to surgical history or just an anomaly in how the belly button formed (or didn't, for that matter). Most of the time, if you don't have a belly button, it's related to a surgery or a medical condition you had when you were younger.

Can gastroschisis correct itself?

Gastroschisis occurs due to a weakness in the baby's abdominal wall muscles near the umbilical cord. If your baby develops this condition during your pregnancy, you will not experience any symptoms related to it. Gastroschisis can be repaired with surgery after your baby is born.

How does omphalocele happen?

Omphalocele occurs when the intestines do not recede back into the abdomen, but remain in the umbilical cord. Other abdominal organs can also protrude through this opening, resulting in the varied organ involvement that occurs in omphalocele.

What is isolated omphalocele?

The word omphalocele comes from the Greek Omphalos (umbilicus) and Cele (cavity). A baby can have an isolated omphalocele, meaning that that is the only problem the baby has, or omphalocele can be one of many problems the baby has.

Can amniocentesis detect omphalocele?

Tests and monitoring include: Targeted ultrasound: Doctors can confirm the diagnosis of omphalocele by ultrasound. Amniocentesis: Omphaloceles can be associated with some chromosomal abnormalities (up to 30 percent), so your doctor may offer an amniocentesis.

Are babies born without brains?

Anencephaly (pronounced an-en-sef-uh-lee) is a serious birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull.

Is omphalocele more common in males?

Omphalocele is sometimes associated with other congenital malformations which increase the newborns mortality and the defect seems to be more prevalent in male gender. The prevalence of associated anomalies is in 31 to 50% of omphaloceles or more (63 to 80%) according to the series [6, 10, 13, 16,17,18].

How often is omphalocele isolated?

The presence of isolated omphalocele without association to genetic defect or associated structural anomaly is estimated in 3–6.5% of all cases when it is prenatally diagnosed [3, 7].

What causes a baby to be born with organs on the outside?

Gastroschisis occurs early during pregnancy when the muscles that make up the baby's abdominal wall do not form correctly. A hole occurs which allows the intestines and other organs to extend outside of the body, usually to the right side of belly button.

What medication causes omphalocele?

Women who use tobacco while pregnant are at an increased risk of their unborn child developing omphalocele. SSRIs. Women who use selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during pregnancy are more likely to have a baby with omphalocele. SSRIs are usually found in medications like antidepressants.

Can you have omphalocele and gastroschisis?

Gastroschisis and omphalocele are defects of the abdominal wall that occur in utero, can be detected antenatally using fetal ultrasonography, and result in herniation of abdominal contents. In contrast to omphalocele, there is no sac covering the intestines in gastroschisis.
