Compression of spinal nerves or spinal cord can produce varying degrees of pain and even disability. Contrary to the common belief, a hypertrophied ligamentum flavum (ligamentum flavum hypertrophy) is treatable non-surgically.

How is ligamentum flavum hypertrophy treated?

The current treatment approach for LF thickening includes operative and nonoperative treatment. Operative treatment includes such procedures as excision of the LF, decompressive laminectomy, and minimally invasive decompression.

Is ligamentum flavum hypertrophy serious?

Ligamentum flavum hypertrophy refers to abnormal thickening of the ligamentum flavum. If severe, it can be associated with spinal canal stenosis.

Can the ligamentum flavum heal?

Unfortunately, there is little to no regeneration power of elastin tissue at ligamentum flavum, loss of elastin tissue cannot be recovered.

Is ligamentum flavum hypertrophy the same as spinal stenosis?

Ligamentum flavum (LF) hypertrophy is a common cause of lumbar spinal stenosis and is thought to be degeneration-driven. Developmental spinal stenosis (DSS) is characterized by pre-existing narrowed spinal canals and is likely a developmental problem that occurs in childhood.

Can ligamentum flavum hypertrophy be caused by trauma?

Although ligamentum flavum hypertrophy is not uncommon, it is usually seen in trauma as a result of tearing and scar formation or in spondylosis. This is the first case report of such a condition due to acromegaly in which the neurological symptoms are more often due to peripheral nerve and muscle abnormalities.

What does ligamentum flavum feel like?

Pass the needle through the ligamentum flavum, which may feel as a sudden yielding sensation or give as it is penetrated, often referred to as a 'pop'.

Is the ligamentum flavum continuous?

Results: The ligamentum flavum consists of a superficial and a deep component. It is continuous in the midline. The superficial ligamentum flavum inserts onto the superior edge and posterosuperior surface of the caudal lamina. ... This slip is the inferior portion of the deep ligamentum flavum.

What is thickened ligamentum flavum?

Ligamentum flavum hypertrophy is a condition in which the ligamentum flavum (LF) thickens due to stresses placed on the spine. With hypertrophy, ligamentum flavum (LF) increases in thickness (size). The thicker it becomes, the higher the risks of compressing the spinal cord or spinal nerves.

Can you be paralyzed from spinal stenosis?

Can spinal stenosis cause permanent paralysis? While the narrowing of the spine can cause pain, it usually doesn't cause paralysis. However, if a spinal nerve or the spinal cord is compressed for a long period of time, permanent numbness and/or paralysis is possible.

Is walking good for you when you have stenosis of the spine?

Walking is a suitable exercise for you if you have spinal stenosis. It is low-impact, and you can easily vary the pace as needed. Consider a daily walk (perhaps on your lunch break or as soon as you get home).

What causes ligament thickening?

Other studies support the hypothesis that a facet degeneration alone without disc space narrowing can lead to physiologic ligament thickening. Furthermore, thickening occurs as a result of inflammation and fibrocartilaginous transformation can cause hypertrophy of the ligament.

Are there any new treatments for spinal stenosis?

Vertiflex procedure is minimally invasive and reversible

A new spinal stenosis treatment is allowing people to walk without pain for the first time in years – and without relying on opioids.

What are the final stages of spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis, often an end stage of the spine degenerative process, is characterized by leg pain with walking. Pain will go away with rest but you may have to specifically sit down to ease the leg pain.

Is laminectomy the same as decompression?

Cervical laminectomy

Laminectomy is surgery that creates space by removing the lamina — the back part of a vertebra that covers your spinal canal. Also known as decompression surgery, laminectomy enlarges your spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.

Can back ligaments heal?

Given time, most injuries to the ligaments and muscles will heal on their own within six weeks. The key to recovery is staying active, within limits. Most people who try to return to their normal lives as soon as possible find that their ache gradually fades.

Is ligamentum flavum elastic?

The ligamentum flavum is 80% elastic fibers and 20% collagen fibers. The elastic fibers within the ligamentum flavum prevent it from buckling into the intervertebral foramen (IVF) and vertebral canal, thus sparing the contents of these regions.

What is unusual about the ligamentum flavum?

Ligamentum flavum literally means "yellow ligament," and is so known because it has a yellow coloring due to the amount of elastin (a springy type of collagen). ... The elastin pulls the ligament out of the canal when the spine is extended.

What does a neurologist do for spinal stenosis?

Neurology. Neurologists specialize in disorders and issues related to the nervous system, including the spine. A neurologist's expertise will be able to pinpoint what is causing pain and discomfort from spinal stenosis, which is often due to compression of or damage to the spine's nerve roots or cord.

Can spinal stenosis go away?

Spinal stenosis can't be cured but responds to treatment

"The symptoms of spinal stenosis typically respond to conservative treatments, including physical therapy and injections." Dr. Hennenhoefer says you can live a normal life with a spinal stenosis diagnosis and can work on improving your mobility and comfort.

What does ligamentum mean?

What is ligamentum flavum laxity?

The ligamentum flavum connects the vertebrae by attaching itself to the front of each spinal segment. ... It is caused by a mutation in collagen, which often results in detrimental joint and ligament laxity (Chiarelli et al., 2019).

What is Ligamentum Nuchae?

The ligamentum nuchae is a large median ligament composed of tendons and fascia located between the posterior muscles of the neck. It covers the spines of C1 to C6 vertebrae. It is a superior and posterior extension of the supraspinous ligament. ... It is thick and strong, limiting hyperflexion of the neck.

What does Flavum mean?

Flavum is a Latin word meaning "yellow". It is often used in taxonomy for species names typically in scientific names for animals and plants to refer to the flower colour or other aspect of the species.
