Injuries from sports, overuse, or trauma can cause the patella to move slightly off and not track properly in the trochlear groove. In most cases, the kneecap shifts to the outside of the leg, but it can also move towards the inside.

Is your kneecap supposed to move?

As you bend or straighten your leg, the kneecap is pulled up or down. The thighbone (femur) has a V-shaped notch (femoral groove) at one end to accommodate the moving kneecap. In a normal knee, the kneecap fits nicely in the groove.

How do you know if your knee cap has moved?

• sudden swelling of the knee.
• being unable to walk.

What is a floating knee cap?

Floating knee injuries may include a combination of diaphyseal, metaphyseal, and intra-articular fractures. The fractures range from simple diaphyseal to complex articular types.

Can your knee cap be loose?

When a person is hit on the knee or falls on it, the kneecap can be knocked loose from its position. A loose, unstable, or dislocated kneecap is referred to as patellar (kneecap) instability. Why does my kneecap move around?

Loose Kneecap

When your kneecap moves more than usual, you have patellar subluxation. Aside from looser tendons and ligaments, you may have this condition if your leg bones have a different shape than normal. For instance, the lower end of your tibia (the large bone in your thigh), contains a v-shaped notch.

How do you fix a loose knee cap?

Most patellar tracking problems can be treated effectively without surgery. Nonsurgical treatment may include rest, regular stretching and strengthening exercises, taping or bracing the knee, using ice, and short-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

What causes patella tilt?

Patellar tracking disorder is usually caused by several problems combined, such as: Weak thigh muscles. Tendons, ligaments, or muscles in the leg that are too tight or too loose. Activities that stress the knee again and again, especially those with twisting motions.

Usually a pre-existence ligamentous laxity is required to allow a dislocation to occur in this manner.

How do you correct a lateral patellar tilt?

Lateral release is a minimally invasive surgery used to correct an excessive patellar tilt. It involves cutting through a tight retinaculum so that the kneecap can slip properly into its groove, thereby restoring its normal alignment.

What can go wrong with patella?

Normally, the hyaline cartilage on the back surface of the patella is thicker than anywhere else in the body. Problems with the cartilage on the back of the patella include softening, blistering, fissuring, erosion, and thinning. These problems are collectively called chondromalacia patella.

How do you test for Luxating patella?

Patellar luxations are graded from 1 (least severe) to 4 (most severe), based on the amount of time the patella is out of the trochlear groove. An affected dog commonly stops and cries out as he is running, then will hold the leg up for seconds to minutes.
