A GFCI can go bad or fail in three ways. The first way it can fail is that it won't trip when you push the test button and the outlet stays hot or dead; the second way is that the trip button stays out and won't reset; and the third way, and most dangerous, is that the button trips out but the outlet stays hot.

How do you know if a GFCI outlet is bad?

To test a GFCI, push the 'reset' button. On many devices the reset button is red, however, on some, the buttons are the same color as the outlet. Then, plug in a testing device, such as a lamp. Press the 'test' button.

Do GFCI outlets need to be replaced?

All GFCIs manufactured after mid-2006 are designed to tell you when they fail. The vast majority indicate failure by shutting off power permanently. So someday your GFCI (and any other outlets connected to it) will simply stop delivering power and you'll have to replace it.

Can GFCI outlets stop working?

Recently installed GFCI devices can also stop working if they're defective. Or, there may be another issue if the outlet was wired improperly or the area is too wet. It's best practice to place outlets away from tubs.

GFCI outlets and breakers can fail. GFCI devices will last about 10 to 15 years before starting to go bad or failing. GFCI outlets can go bad in as little as five years.

Do I Have a Bad GFCI?

What can cause a GFCI to go bad?

The industry standard for change-outs is typically every 10 to 15 years, but you really should have a qualified electrician inspect any outlet that has been exposed to excessive UV light, heat, moisture, or chemical vapors, as all these factors can cause a ground fault interrupter to fail prematurely.

Why does my GFCI keep going bad?

A GFCI outlet does not provide overcurrent protection, meaning too much power within the circuit that is the breaker or fuse's job. ... That imbalance can be caused by a number of things- a bad outlet within the circuit, coming in contact with moisture or a ground fault just to name a few.

How do you fix a GFCI that won't reset?

1. Check if the other outlets are dead.
2. Check for the tripped circuit or a blown fuse.

What does it mean when GFCI won't reset?

A GFCI or GFI outlet may not reset because there's a ground fault occurring at a regular outlet that's not working, or somewhere else downstream of the GFI. ... Chances are, there's a ground-fault at one or more downstream wires, receptacles, or electrical devices. An incorrectly installed GFI may be problematic too.

Can one bad outlet affect others?

You have an open or an intermittent connection. If it was a short the circuit breaker would have tripped. If that receptacle is the only one on that circuit then it shouldn't affect any other circuits.

What does yellow light on GFCI mean?

The amber light on the self-test GFCI indicates the device is in tripped state or at "end of life". A blinking red light can indicate "end of life", reset or tripped state.
