COVID-19Common question

As of yet, we are unsure of the nature of human immunity to Coronavirus.

Can I get reinfected with COVID-19?

Based on what we know from other viruses, including common human coronaviruses, some reinfections are expected. Ongoing COVID-19 studies will help establish the frequency and severity of reinfection and who might be at higher risk for reinfection.

How long does it take to develop immunity after a COVID-19 infection?

Although the immune correlates of protection are not fully understood, evidence indicates that antibody development following infection likely confers some degree of immunity from subsequent infection for at least 6 months.

What happens if a recovered person from COVID-19 develop symptoms again?

If a previously infected person has recovered clinically but later develops symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 infection, they should be both quarantined and retested.

What should a person who recovered from COVID-19 do when they are exposed to it again, according to the CDC?

The following applies to a person who has clinically recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection that was confirmed with a viral diagnostic test and then, within 3 months since the date of symptom onset of the previous illness episode (or date of positive viral diagnostic test if the person never experienced symptoms), is identified as a contact of a new case. If the person remains asymptomatic since the new exposure, then they do not need to be retested for SARS-CoV-2 and do not need to be quarantined. However, if the person experiences new symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and an evaluation fails to identify a diagnosis other than SARS-CoV-2 infection (e.g., influenza), then repeat viral diagnostic testing may be warranted, in consultation with an infectious disease specialist and public health authorities for isolation guidance.

Should the person who has clinically recovered from COVID-19 continue to wear a cloth face covering in public?

Yes. It is recommended that all persons, with a few exceptions, wear cloth face coverings in public.

Can patients who have recovered from COVID-19 continue to have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory specimens?

• Patients who have recovered from COVID-19 can continue to have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory specimens for up to 3 months after illness onset in concentrations considerably lower than during illness; however, replication-competent virus has not been reliably recovered and infectiousness is unlikely.

How long can a patient still feel the effects of COVID-19 after recovery?

Older people and people with many serious medical conditions are the most likely to experience lingering COVID-19 symptoms, but even young, otherwise healthy people can feel unwell for weeks to months after infection.

Can you still have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA after recovering from COVID-19?

Some people who have recovered may have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory specimens for up to 3 months after illness onset, albeit at concentrations considerably lower than during illness, in ranges where replication-competent virus has not been reliably recovered and infectiousness is unlikely.

Are recovered persons with persistent positive test of COVID-19 infectious to others?

Persons who have tested persistently or recurrently positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA have, in some cases, had their signs and symptoms of COVID-19 improve. When viral isolation in tissue culture has been attempted in such persons in South Korea and the United States, live virus has not been isolated. There is no evidence to date that clinically recovered persons with persistent or recurrent detection of viral RNA have transmitted SARS-CoV-2 to others.

Despite these observations, it’s not possible to conclude that all persons with persistent or recurrent detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA are no longer infectious. There is no firm evidence that the antibodies that develop in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection are protective. If these antibodies are protective, it’s not known what antibody levels are needed to protect against reinfection.

How does the body develop immunity to COVID-19?

Once you've been exposed to a virus, your body makes memory cells. If you're exposed to that same virus again, these cells recognize it. They tell your immune system to make antibodies against it.

How does your immune system act after you recover from COVID-19?

After you recover from a virus, your immune system retains a memory of it. That means that if you get infected again, proteins and immune cells in your body can recognize and kill the virus, protecting you from the disease and reducing its severity.

Should I get the COVID-19 vaccine if I had COVID-19?

Yes, you should be vaccinated regardless of whether you already had COVID-19.

Can I get reinfected with COVID-19 after I have been vaccinated in Kentucky?

These findings suggest that among persons with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection, full vaccination provides additional protection against reinfection. Among previously infected Kentucky residents, those who were not vaccinated were more than twice as likely to be reinfected compared with those with full vaccination.

What does a negative SARS-CoV-2 antibody test mean?

A negative result on a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test means antibodies to the virus were not detected in your sample. It could mean:
• You have not been infected with COVID-19 previously.
• You had COVID-19 in the past but you did not develop or have not yet developed detectable antibodies.

How are COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 related?

The novel coronavirus, or SARS-CoV-2, is a potentially deadly virus that can lead to COVID-19.

How long can COVID-19 antibodies be detected in blood samples?

Antibodies may be detected in your blood for several months or more after you recover from COVID-19.

What are some of the lingering side effects of COVID-19?

A full year has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and the mind-boggling aftermath of the virus continues to confuse doctors and scientists. Particularly concerning for doctors and patients alike are lingering side effects, such as memory loss, reduced attention and an inability to think straight.

How long does the post-COVID condition last?

Although most people with COVID-19 get better within weeks of illness, some people experience post-COVID conditions. Post-COVID conditions are a wide range of new, returning, or ongoing health problems people can experience more than four weeks after first being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.

What are some neurological long-term side effects of COVID-19 after recovery?

A variety of neurological health complications have been shown to persist in some patients who recover from COVID-19. Some patients who recover from their illness may continue to experience neuropsychiatric issues, including fatigue, 'fuzzy brain,' or confusion.

What does it mean if I tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies?

If you test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, it probably means you've had the virus. It's also possible to get a “false positive” if you have antibodies but had a different kind of coronavirus. A positive result might mean you have some immunity to the coronavirus.

Does an antibody test diagnose an active COVID-19?

Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection.

When SARS-CoV-2 RNA is generally detectable in respiratory specimens?

The SARS-CoV-2 RNA is generally detectable in respiratory specimens during the acute phase of infection. Positive results are indicative of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA; clinical correlation with patient history and other diagnostic information is necessary to determine patient infection status.

Do we still need to wear a mask after getting a COVID-19 vaccine?

After you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, take these steps to protect yourself and others:

• In general, you do not need to wear a mask in outdoor settings.
• If you are in an area with high numbers of COVID-19 cases, consider wearing a mask in crowded outdoor settings and when you are in close contact with others who are not fully vaccinated.
• If you have a condition or taking medications that weaken your immune system, you may not be fully protected even if you are fully vaccinated. You should continue to take all precautions recommended for unvaccinated people, including wearing a well-fitted mask, until advised otherwise by their healthcare provider.
• If you are fully vaccinated, to maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.

How long does COVID-19 survive on clothes?

Research suggests that COVID-19 doesn’t survive for long on clothing, compared to hard surfaces, and exposing the virus to heat may shorten its life. A study published in found that at room temperature, COVID-19 was detectable on fabric for up to two days, compared to seven days for plastic and metal.
