Eligibility may vary, depending on the availability of tests. A health care professional takes a blood sample, usually by a finger prick or by drawing blood from a vein in the arm. Then the sample is tested to determine whether you've developed antibodies against the virus.

Can blood samples be used to test for COVID-19?

Blood samples are only used to test for antibodies and not to diagnose COVID-19. Venous blood samples are typically collected at a doctor's office or clinic. Some antibody tests use blood from a finger stick.

What is the difference between the types of tests available for COVID-19?

There are two different types of tests – diagnostic tests and antibody tests. A diagnostic test can show if you have an active coronavirus infection and should take steps to quarantine or isolate yourself from others.

Currently there are two types of diagnostic tests – molecular (RT-PCR) tests that detect the virus's genetic material, and antigen tests that detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus. Samples are typically collected with a nasal or throat swab, or saliva collected by spitting into a tube.

An antibody test looks for antibodies that are made by the immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can help fight infections. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery.

What does a positive COVID-19 antibody test result mean?

A positive test result with the SARS-CoV-2 antibody test indicates that antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 were detected, and the individual has potentially been exposed to COVID-19.

What is the difference between a COVID-19 swab test and an antibody blood test?

A swab or spit test can tell only if you have the virus in your body at that moment. But a blood test shows whether you've ever been infected with the virus, even if you didn't have symptoms.

Can COVID-19 antibody tests be used to assess for immunity to COVID-19?

• Antibody testing is not currently recommended to assess for immunity to SARS-CoV-2 following COVID-19 vaccination, to assess the need for vaccination in an unvaccinated person, or to determine the need to quarantine after a close contact with someone who has COVID-19.

What does an antibody test tell you?

Antibodies are detected in the blood of people who have been previously infected with or vaccinated against a virus that causes a disease; they show the body's efforts (past infection) or preparedness (past infection or vaccination) to fight off a specific virus.

Does an antibody test diagnose an active COVID-19?

Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection.

What does a negative SARS-CoV-2 antibody test mean?

A negative result on a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test means antibodies to the virus were not detected in your sample. It could mean:
• You have not been infected with COVID-19 previously.
• You had COVID-19 in the past but you did not develop or have not yet developed detectable antibodies.

What does the detection of Covid -19 antibodies in my body mean?

When antibodies are found (a positive test result), it may mean that a person was infected with SARS-CoV-2 and their body’s immune system responded to the virus at some point in the past. People develop antibodies when their body’s immune system responds to an infection. These antibodies can be found in the blood of people previously infected whether or not they had signs or symptoms of illness.

Are saliva tests just as effective as nasal swabs to diagnose COVID-19?

Saliva testing for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is as effective as the standard nasopharyngeal tests, according to a new study by investigators at McGill University.

Which is more accurate nasopharyngeal or nasal swab for COVID-19 testing?

In other words, you are more likely to obtain a more accurate diagnosis when sampling with the nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs than you are with a nasal or throat swab.” For this reason, the nasopharyngeal swab has been the standard for reliable testing.

Is there a diagnostic test for COVID-19?

Yes, the FDA has issued Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) for different types of COVID-19 tests. Some tests are used to diagnose the virus that causes COVID-19 infection whereas other tests are used to detect a recent or prior COVID-19 infection.

How long can COVID-19 antibodies be detected in blood samples?

Antibodies may be detected in your blood for several months or more after you recover from COVID-19.

How are people tested for COVID-19?

Most tests to diagnose COVID-19 require a swab of your nose, or the part of the throat behind the nose, by a health care provider. A few tests use saliva (spit) or other types of collection methods. For most tests, the swab or sample must be sent to a lab for analysis.

What is the COVID-19 PCR diagnostic test?

PCR test: Stands for polymerase chain reaction test. This is a diagnostic test that determines if you are infected by analyzing a sample to see if it contains genetic material from the virus.

What is the false negative rate from COVID-19 antibody test results?

The reported rate of false negatives is 20%. However, the range of false negatives is from 0% to 30% depending on the study and when in the course of infection the test is performed.

What does a negative COVID-19 antigen test result mean in asymptomatic persons?

Negative test results using a viral test (NAAT or antigen) in asymptomatic persons with recent known or suspected exposure suggest no current evidence of infection. These results represent a snapshot of the time around specimen collection and could change if tested again in one or more days.

What does it mean if I tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies?

If you test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, it probably means you've had the virus. It's also possible to get a “false positive” if you have antibodies but had a different kind of coronavirus. A positive result might mean you have some immunity to the coronavirus.

What is the COVID-19 antibody test?

An antibody test looks for antibodies that are made by the immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can help fight infections. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection. At this time, researchers do not know if the presence of antibodies means that you are immune to the coronavirus in the future.

Would COVID-19 antibody test be positive after vaccine?

Be aware that if you have a positive test result on a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test, it is possible you were previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. A COVID-19 vaccination may also cause a positive antibody test result for some but not all antibody tests.

When can antibodies be detected after COVID-19 infection?

After infection with the COVID-19 virus, it can take two to three weeks to develop enough antibodies to be detected in an antibody test, so it's important that you're not tested too soon.

What is the purpose of COVID-19 antibody or serology tests?

SARS-CoV-2 antibody or serology tests look for antibodies in a blood sample to determine if an individual has had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. These types of tests cannot be used to diagnose a current infection.

Where can I get an antibody or a diagnostic test for COVID-19?

Antibody and diagnostic tests are available by prescription from a health care provider and may be available at local health care facilities and testing centers. Contact your health care provider or your local or state health department for more information.

Can I return to work after having the COVID-19 antibody test?

Antibody test results should not be used to determine if someone can return to work or school.
