Latency from a general point of view is a time delay between the cause and the effect of some physical change in the system being observed.

What is a good latency?

So now that we see high latency means a delay in data transmission, what is considered “good” latency when it comes to online games? Typically, anything at 100ms is acceptable for gaming. However, the 20ms to 40ms range is considered optimal.

Is 40 ms latency good?

The difference between high and low latency

Low latency is ideal as this means you are experiencing smoother gameplay. Generally, an acceptable latency (or ping) is anywhere around 40 – 60 milliseconds (ms) or lower, while a speed of over 100ms will usually mean a noticeable lag in gaming.

What does Internet latency mean?

Latency is a measure of how much time it takes for your computer to send signals to a server and then receive a response back. Because it's a measure of time delay, you want your latency to be as low as possible. Bandwidth measures how much data your internet connection can download or upload at a time.

What is an example of latency?

Network latency

Network latency describes a delay that takes place during communication over a network (including the Internet). For example, a slow router may cause a delay of a few milliseconds when one system on a LAN tries to connect to another through the router.

Why do I lag when I have good internet?

Wi-Fi will lag when playing even the best online games based on two factors: your bandwidth, which is how much data can be transferred at a time (the higher the number, the better) and your ping, which is how long it takes requests from your network to reach and then come back from the server (the lower the number, the ...
