The evidence for continental drift included the fit of the continents; the distribution of ancient fossils, rocks, and mountain ranges; and the locations of ancient climatic zones.

What was the most obvious evidence for continental drift?

Evidence for continental drift

Wegener knew that fossil plants and animals such as mesosaurs, a freshwater reptile found only South America and Africa during the Permian period, could be found on many continents. He also matched up rocks on either side of the Atlantic Ocean like puzzle pieces.

What was the early evidence for continental drift?

Other fossil evidence also supports the theory of continental drift. The earliest marine fossils found along the eastern coast of South America and the western coast of Africa date from about 150 to 200 million years ago, suggesting that the Atlantic Ocean did not exist prior to that time.

What are the 4 evidences of continental drift?

The four pieces of evidence for the continental drift include continents fitting together like a puzzle, scattering ancient fossils, rocks, mountain ranges, and the old climatic zones' locations.

What are the 5 evidences of continental drift?

They based their idea of continental drift on several lines of evidence: fit of the continents, paleoclimate indicators, truncated geologic features, and fossils.

Evidence of Continental Drift

What are 6 pieces of evidence that support continental drift?

They based their idea of continental drift on several lines of evidence: fit of the continents, paleoclimate indicators, truncated geologic features, and fossils.

What is the evidence for continental drift and plate tectonics?

Fossil Evidence

One type of evidence that strongly supported the Theory of Continental Drift is the fossil record. Fossils of similar types of plants and animals in rocks of a similar age have been found on the shores of different continents, suggesting that the continents were once joined.

How was continental drift proven?

Fossils of similar organisms across widely disparate continents encouraged the revolutionary theory of continental drift. Continental drift describes one of the earliest ways geologists thought continents moved over time. Today, the theory of continental drift has been replaced by the science of plate tectonics.

What kinds of evidence did Hess have to support the theory of continental drift?

Alfred Wegener produced evidence in 1912 that the continents are in motion, but because he could not explain what forces could move them, geologists rejected his ideas. Almost 50 years later Harry Hess confirmed Wegener's ideas by using the evidence of seafloor spreading to explain what moved continents.

Why was continental drift not accepted?

The main reason that Wegener's hypothesis was not accepted was because he suggested no mechanism for moving the continents. He thought the force of Earth's spin was sufficient to cause continents to move, but geologists knew that rocks are too strong for this to be true.

Which of these did not provide evidence for continental drift?

divergent. Which of these did NOT provide evidence for continental drift? oceanic plate theory. Where does sea-floor spreading take place?

What are the evidences of plate movements?

Evidence from fossils, glaciers, and complementary coastlines helps reveal how the plates once fit together. Fossils tell us when and where plants and animals once existed. Some life "rode" on diverging plates, became isolated, and evolved into new species.

Which among the continental drift pieces of evidence mainly proves that the Cape Mountains of South America and Africa line up perfectly before?

Which one among the continental drift pieces of evidences mainly proves that the Cape Mountains of South America and Africa line up perfectly before? There's equal amount of coal deposits in each continent and fossils. The evidence from the rock layers in this two continents exactly matched.

Which three continents contain coal fields that provide evidence for continental drift?

. The answer is Eurasia, North America, Africa, and South America. Most of the coal fields in the world are located in these countries along with good quality coal fields are found in Africa and South America.

What are the four pieces of evidence for continental drift quizlet?

List four pieces of evidence for Wegener's hypothesis of continental drift? Continents fit like a puzzle, climate clues, fossil clues, and rock layers or formations. What was the name of the reptile that Wegners found in both South America and Africa?

Which of the following answers is evidence for continental drift except?

Wegener used all the following to provide evidence for continental drift except : age of selected continental rocks.

What are 3 types of evidence for seafloor spreading?

What three types of evidence provided support for the theory of sea floor spreading? eruptions of molten material, magnetic stripes in the rock of the ocean floor, and the ages of the rocks themselves.

What does continental drift have to do with the shapes of South America and Africa?

Wegener called his theory the "continental drift" theory, referring to the apparent movement of continents alone. ... The two continents are still moving away from each other today. In this handwriting, coloring, and cutting exercise the students will discover that South America fits into Africa, much like a jigsaw puzzle.

What are the basic assumptions of the continental drift hypothesis?

Alfred Wegener first presented his hypothesis to the German Geological Society on 6 January 1912. His hypothesis was that the continents had once formed a single landmass, called Pangaea, before breaking apart and drifting to their present locations.

Which direction has Africa drifted?

It has been moving over the past 100 million years or so in a general northeast direction. This is drawing it closer to the Eurasian Plate, causing subduction where oceanic crust is converging with continental crust (e.g. portions of the central and eastern Mediterranean).

Where in the continental United States do we see evidence of plate movement?

The Pacific coast of the United States coincides with plate boundaries and thus has earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and developing mountain ranges. The Atlantic and Gulf coasts, though initially formed from plate-boundary activity, are now far from any plate boundaries and accompanying tectonic events.

What evidence shows that the Pacific plate moving?

The evidence for this motion is pretty convincing: earthquakes: earthquakes occur on the boundaries of the plates as they rub past each other. The motion observed during these earthquakes agrees well with the expected motion.

Which of the following evidences proves that Pangaea had existed?

The rock formations of eastern North America, Western Europe, and northwestern Africa were later found to have a common origin, and they overlapped in time with the presence of Gondwanaland. Together, these discoveries supported the existence of Pangea.

Which of the following discoveries is evidence supporting the idea of continental drift?

Q. Which of the following discoveries is evidence supporting the idea of continental drift? ... The evidence supporting continental drift supports plate tectonics, because plate tectonics is a modified, expanded version of continental drift hypothesis.

What was wrong with Wegener's idea of continental drift?

The Problem with the Hypothesis

To his colleagues, his greatest problem was that he had no plausible mechanism for how the continents could move through the oceans. Based on his polar experiences, Wegener suggested that the continents were like icebreaking ships plowing through ice sheets.
