Current Production Pushrod Engines Right now, General Motors and Fiat-Chrysler still manufacture and sell vehicles with pushrod V8 engines. ... Rather interestingly, after a 20-year hiatus, Ford is jumping back into the over-head valve game with its very own 7.3-liter Godzilla big block.

Do they still make pushrod engines?

The pushrod engine is a rather archaic piece of engineering, but automakers have stuck by it to this day. Notably, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles and General Motors still shove pushrod V-8 engines under the hoods of hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

Does GM still use pushrod engines?

GM continues to design and produce push rod (Over Head Valve or OHV) engines while most of their competitors have gone to over head cam (OHC) configurations for their performance engines.

What is wrong with push rod engines?

A downside to pushrod engines is, well, pushrods. And their associated rocker arms. The reciprocating mass of these parts limits the effective maximum revs the engine can spin because at higher speeds inertia will keep the valves from closing before the camshaft starts to open them again.

Are pushrod engines any good?

Pushrod engines are also simple, with far fewer moving parts that could break over time. That's a big part of the reason why Chevy's small-block V8s are famous for their reliability and durability. This simplicity also means a pushrod engine is generally cheaper to produce than an equivalent overhead-cam unit.

5 Reasons Pushrod Engines Still Exist

Is the Hemi a pushrod engine?

It is a 90-degree V8, 2-valve pushrod design like the past Magnum series engines, displacing 5,654 cc (345 cu in), with a bore of 3.917 in (99.49 mm) and a stroke of 3.578 in (90.88 mm). The 5.7 L Hemi is made at Chrysler's Saltillo Engine plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

Is the Chevy 5.3 a pushrod engine?

The 5.3L EcoTec3 has aluminum cylinder heads with two valves per cylinder, 59cc combustion chambers, and straight and rectangular intake ports with a slight twist. Like the 5.3 Vortec, the new V8 uses a pushrod valvetrain and a single camshaft located in the engine block.

Why can't V8s rev high?

Without extra valves, the engine can't take in enough air at higher rpm and it becomes starved for air. Thus, it can't rev as high. ... A pushrod engine also generally doesn't allow for the timing of the intake and exhaust valves to be optimized for the airflow needed for high rpm needs.

Is Ford going back to pushrod engines?

Based on a quote in the Windsor Star from Canadian auto union Unifor's national president Jerry Dias, 6.8-liter power will be returning to Ford's vehicles, particularly in the 2022 F-150 and Mustang. ... It's been proven that the 7.3-liter can fit in classic and modern Mustangs.

Why is overhead cam better than pushrod?

Higher RPMs: OHC design allows for a much broader rev range, including a higher redline that's unachievable with a pushrod engine. Top-End Torque: Sure, OHV engines have a low-end grunt, but overhead cam engines can quickly meet and exceed torque needs.

Is the 6.4 Hemi a pushrod engine?

In general, the 6.4 Hemi is a big reliable, American pushrod V8 engine with a factory warranty for five years or 100,000 miles.

Are LS Motors pushrod?

The LS remains a pushrod, 2-valve V8 in a land of DOHC engines. Its bore centers, the distance between the centerline of each cylinder, has not changed since 1955. Chevrolet considers the LS to be simply an extension - a new branch of the original small-block V8 tree.

What cars still have pushrod engines?

Current Production Pushrod Engines

These include the Chevrolet LS-based small block V8, which traces its roots directly back to 1955, and the Chrysler Hemi, which is still going strong in everything from the Jeep Grand Cherokee to the Dodge Hellcat and Demon.

Are diesels pushrod engines?

Pushrods are fine for most diesels, so that's why most diesels have them.

Is the Hellcat a pushrod engine?

The Challenger SRT Hellcat is equipped with a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 motor with 16-valves, a deep-skirt cast-iron block, and aluminum Hemispherical cylinder heads. ... It has the same pushrod-operated overhead valvetrain with 16-valves and hydraulic roller lifters.

Is the 7.3 Godzilla a pushrod?

Featuring an overhead valve (OHV), pushrod design, in a V configuration, the Godzilla architecture was added to Ford's heavy duty lineup of engines alongside the 6.2L Boss and the 6.7L Power Stroke turbodiesel for the 2020 model year.

Is the 7.3 Godzilla a pushrod V8?

As big engines seem to be dropping like flies on this continent, Ford is making a whopping, brand new 7.3-litre pushrod V8 over in the USA. It's been devised for the F-250 Super Duty pickup, but now, this all-new anachronism is available as a crate engine.

How much does a 7.3 L Godzilla cost?

How do Nascar engines rev so high?

The NASCAR engines have extremely radical cam profiles, which open the intake valves much earlier and keep them open longer than street cars. This allows more air to be packed into the cylinders, especially at high speeds (see How Camshafts Work for more details).

Why do Hondas rev so high?

Honda engines are usually oversquare, (shorter stroke, larger bore) then other engines of the same capacity, Allowing them to change direction more quickly. Hence they can rev higher.

Is going over 4000 rpm bad?

There's no harm running your engine at 4000 rpm for five minutes as long as the engine or cvt don't overheat. Vehicle manufacturers regularly test engines on dynamometers at wide open throttle for hours at a time.

What year did GM FIX 5.3 oil consumption?

As we pointed out before, GM redesigned its 5.3-liter V8 engine after the 2014 model year, using different piston rings and adding a shield to deflect oil away from the piston skirts. The newer versions of the engine also feature a true oil level sensor and new valve covers.

What is the difference between the L82 and L84?
