As stated prior, if the rotors weren't machined or lightly surfaced when the pads were changed, that will give you a spongy feel as you are not stopping as effectively and takes more effort to slow down. With new rotors and pads, the machine marks on the rotors help to break in the rotors and pads together.

Why are my new brakes spongy?

If air gets into the brake lines, it can prevent brake fluid from flowing properly, causing the brake pedal to feel spongy or soft. If the brakes are soft or spongy, this is a good time to change or flush the brake fluid. Flushing the brake fluid, commonly called bleeding the brakes, gets rid of the air.

How long does it take for new brake pads to bed in?

Running with excessive run-out on the hub or rotor will cause vibration issues. "Bedding-in new pads and rotors should be done carefully and slowly... Most brake pad compounds will take up to 300-400 miles to fully develop an even transfer film on the rotors."

What should new brakes feel like?

Under optimum operating conditions, your brake pedal should feel firm throughout its travel. The harder you push it, the firmer it should feel. When you mash the brakes quickly, like we've all done from time to time to avoid rear-ending someone, your brake pedal will be at its firmest.

Can you feel the difference with new brake pads?

Brakes are self-adjusted so you should never feel any difference (except for that first pump after the change). The range of travel should be the same with a brand new pad versus one that is complete worn, since the brake cylinders don't retract back to a fixed position.

Soft Brakes? Pedal to the Floor? 5 Common Car Brake Problems to Check!

What do spongy brakes feel like?

A brake pedal that is functioning optimally should feel firm, as if it has a tight hold on the brakes. A “soft,” or “spongy,” brake pedal describes a situation when the brake pedal does not have that firmness. When this occurs, you are placing yourself and your passengers in a potentially unsafe situation.

How do you test spongy brakes?

The easiest way to diagnose this problem is to pump the brake pedal gently a few times. In doing so, the pedal should become firmer with each gentle press of the pedal. If it does, then the obvious approach of bleeding the brakes must commence.

Do new brakes need wear in?

Having new brake pads and rotors installed happens on a regular basis. Once those brake pads and rotors are mounted, it is essential to properly break them in. Bedding in, commonly known as breaking in, new brake pads and rotors is necessary for new brakes to work properly.

Why does my brake pedal go to the floor after changing pads?

This is normal. Now after you try pumping the brakes up and the pedal keeps going to the floor, then you either have a leak somewhere or the master cylinder has excessive debris inside it and caused the pistons to get damaged. You would need to replace the master cylinder.

Do you need to bleed your brakes after changing pads?

The only way to be sure your system doesn't have an air bubble is to bleed your brakes after repairing the leak. If you're replacing worn brake pads, which can cause air to enter the master cylinder. ... If you change your rotors or pads. Any brake job should include a brake bleed for safety's sake.

Is it safe to drive with spongy brakes?

If your brake pedal feels soft or 'spongy' stop immediately and get a breakdown mechanic to check the car. ... Driving with a 'soft' brake pedal is extremely dangerous because your brakes could fail at any moment, even if they don't fail they will be inefficient, possibly leading to an accident.

How do I firm up my brake pedal?

How do I firm up my brake pedal? The most common reason for a soft brake pedal is simply air still in the system. The easiest way to diagnose this problem is to pump the brake pedal gently a few times. In doing so, the pedal should become firmer with each gentle press of the pedal.

Why are my brakes still soft after bleeding?

The most common cause of spongy brakes after bleeding is contaminated brake fluid. Usual contaminates include air or moisture in the system. The most common causes include: Brake bleeding technique.

What does a rock in your brakes sound like?

Squealing or Squeaking Noises

It could just be a foreign object lodged in your brakes (a pebble or debris). ... These bits of metal in your brake pad come in contact with the rotor to emit a high-pitched noise when you apply the brakes. This lets you know it's time to get your brake pads replaced.

Do new ceramic brakes make noise?

Many brake pads today are made of ceramic, which are great for how long they last and how well they stop the vehicle. But they can also cause a great deal of noise on your cast iron rotors. ... If your mechanic installed ceramic pads and they're noisy, see if he/she would be willing to exchange them for semi-metallic pads.

How do I make my brakes feel like new?

First - You could start by flushing the break lines with fresh brake fluid. Old fluid in the lines can contain water and air which would not be good and give you the squishy feeling. Getting rid of the old fluid would probably help the pedal feel tremendously.

Can old brake fluid cause spongy brakes?

Then it could be that old brake fluid is causing the poor brake performance. Or, you could have a possible leak causing your fluid to be low. Either way, get it checked out! This is one of the most common causes of spongy brakes.

Why do my brakes get hard then soft?

This can be due to a number of problems: a leak in a brake line, a loss of pressure within the master cylinder itself due to a failed seal, or air being introduced into the braking system. Your first reaction to encountering spongy brakes should be to rapidly pump the brake pedal with your foot.

What do overheated brakes smell like?

You can tell your brake pads are overheating if something smells funky, literally. Drivers who have sniffed out overheated brake pads say that it's similar to the scent of burning carpet. That's an odor that even the mightiest pine-shaped air fresheners will have a hard time fending off!

What is the most common cause of a spongy brake pedal?

Air in the brake lines is one of the most common causes of spongy brakes. Braking systems rely on evenly distributed hydraulic pressure to bring vehicles to a halt. Air in any of these lines can throw off this balance of pressure. Poor pressure can result in more time, distance, and/or effort to stop.
