Q: Are fire dampers required in one-hour fire-rated walls if the facility is fully sprinkled? A: According to NFPA 90A (1999 edition), one-hour fire-rated barriers do not require fire dampers in fully ducted HVAC systems, unless the one-hour fire-rated barrier is a vertical shaft.

Where is a fire damper required?

Generally, fire dampers are required where air ducts penetrate walls that are rated for 2-hours or more. They are needed in all air transfer openings (non-ducted) in rated walls, regardless of the rating. And they are required at some, but not all penetrations of rated floor assemblies and shaft enclosures.

Are fire dampers mandatory?

Ductwork passing through compartment and sub-compartment walls should be provided with fire dampers. ... When ducts serve a hazard room, then fire dampers are required.

What is the minimum required fire damper rating for a damper located in a 1 hour fire barrier?

Fire/smoke dampers are typically rated for 1-1⁄2 or 3 hours fire resistance. A 1-1⁄2 hour rated damper is sufficient for walls or floors having a rating of less than 3 hours. If the wall or floor has a rating of 3 hours or more, a 3 hour rated damper is required for sufficient protection.

Are dampers required?

Chapter 7 of the International Building Code (IBC)¹ requires life safety dampers to protect duct and air transfer openings within building separations — fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, horizontal assemblies, smoke barriers, and smoke partitions.

AC 015 - What is a fire rated wall?

Why are fire dampers required?

The fire damper secures the integrity of the existing barrier thus preventing fire penetration before temperatures reach the fire rating level of the barrier itself. Its primary function is to prevent the passage of fire from one side to the other of a fire-rated separation.

Do fire dampers need emergency power?

Either emergency power should be provided or smoke dampers should be arranged for fail-safe closure upon failure of power to the actuator. ... Both the IBC and NFPA require that adequate access be provided to allow inspection and that maintenance of the smoke damper be provided.

Can a duct penetrate a fire wall?

The duct shall not terminate at a wall register in the fire-resistance-rated wall. ... Such walls are penetrated by ducted HVAC systems, have a required fire-resistance rating of 1 hour or less, and are in buildings equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3. 1.1 or 903.3. 1.2.

Are fire dampers fire rated?

Fire dampers are provided with an hourly fire rating. Smoke damper's primary function is to control the movement of smoke in dynamic air distribution systems, and they reduce the possibility of smoke transfer within ductwork or through wall openings.

What is the difference between fire damper and smoke damper?

A fire damper closes once the duct temperature reaches a high enough level to melt a fusible link. A smoke damper closes upon the detection of smoke. ... It is UL leakage-rated to stop smoke in its tracks, which is a main difference from fire dampers.

When should fire dampers be used?

Fire Dampers are used in air transfer openings, ducts and other places where fire rated structures (e.g. walls, floors or other fire barriers) are penetrated.

Can a fire damper be installed upside down?

the damper is the wrong size – even if it operates correctly, if it doesn't fill the duct space, it won't contain the fire. the damper has been installed upside down – if that's the case, then gravity will work against it and it won't close.

Should fire dampers be open or closed?

The damper should be kept open until all embers are finished burning to prevent smoke from escaping into the home. When the fireplace is not in use, the damper should always be closed. An open damper is like an open window, allowing large amounts of heat from the home to escape.

Do fire dampers close automatically?

The automatic fire/smoke damper operates (usually) by automatically closing a door or doors within the damper on the detection of a temperature increase or by operation of a separate smoke detector.

How much does a fire damper cost?

The average cost of fire damper testing and inspections is between $40-$150 per fire damper.

Does a fire damper have to be in the wall?

Fire dampers shall be approved for vertical or horizontal mounting as required by the location and are approved for installation “out of the wall or floor.” Dampers shall be installed using steel sleeves, angles and other materials and practice required to provide an installation in accordance with the damper ...

Do you fire caulk fire dampers?

the application of firestopping caulk in the annular space surrounding a fire or fire/smoke damper is not required. However, if the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) or the installation warrants firestopping in place of "standard" retaining angles, the optional firestop caulk provides the solution.

Which type of duct should not be allowed to pass through fire rated walls?

Which type of duct should not be allowed to pass through walls? Flexible duct connector.

How are fire dampers activated?

When a rise in temperature occurs, the fire damper closes, usually activated by a thermal element which melts at temperatures higher than ambient but low enough to indicate the presence of a fire, allowing springs to close the damper blades.

Can you use a fireplace without a damper?

Does My Chimney Have a Fireplace Damper? ... And while older wood-burning fireplaces can function safely without a damper (gas fireplaces cannot), a chimney without a damper is just a gaping hole in the roof of your house. It's a gateway for frigid air to enter and for heated air to escape in the winter.

Can I leave the flue open overnight?

The smoke from burning wood contains carbon monoxide, so in order to prevent this toxic byproduct from entering your home, it is important to leave the flue open overnight. This enables a draft to carry the compound out into the atmosphere, instead of sinking down the chimney and saturating the room.

Should the damper be open all the way?

When should the damper be kept open or closed? The fireplace damper should always be in the open position whenever you have a fire in the fireplace. ... Close the damper when the fire is extinguished. This will prevent the heated air from escaping through the chimney and will keep water and other debris out of the flue.

What is the code minimum temperature rating for a fire damper fusible link?

Fire dampers are equipped with a fusible link (rated for 165°F up to 286°F), which holds the blades open until it the link melts.

Why are fire dampers important in a hospital building?

Every hospital has a complex HVAC system of ducts carrying conditioned air throughout the facility. This labyrinth of ductwork contains a series of fire and smoke dampers that are building and fire code mandated to stop the spread of fire and smoke along the fire and smoke rated barriers.

What is the minimum temperature rating for a smoke damper?

All build- ing codes in the USA require smoke dampers to have a minimum elevated temperature rating of 250 °F (140 °C). Leakage Test: The amount of leakage measured during this test shall determine the leakage class of the damper. For smoke dampers the leakage test is a continuation of the operation test.
